Mexcio Week 95: Final Week
Hey Everybody!
Well I am entering into my last week
in the Mission. It's gone by fast. I would like to mention some of my
experiences and talk about how great of a Mission it has been and what I
have learned. I hope that it might be of great worth to the boys since
they all want to be going on a Mission.
The Mission has been the best yet most difficult
experience that I have had in my life. I think that because it was
difficult it was great. I remember when I first came to Mexico I wanted
to go home. I remember wanting to just give up but I was inspired to go
on and finish. Hahaha, I remember hating the food and feeling lonely since my
companion wasn't the best and the members were a little mean. I realized
that it was just culture shock. Hahaha, since then I have had a lot of
difficult times but I have put them behind trying to learn from them. I
remember when I was a Branch President, things were really hard and I
thought that I was losing faith. Afterwards I learned that my testimony
grew and was strengthened from the trials that took place in
Chignahuapan. I remember the members and the things that I learned from
them as I tried to help them with the spiritual and temporal needs.
I learned alot in Castillotla about Missionary Work
and how to really do it. Elder Escamilla and I had great times and a lot
of success and I will always remember my time with him. I really enjoyed
training Elder Escamilla and also learning from him. He is a great
friend. I learned a lot about leadership in Loma Florida (Apizaco) when I was a DL
and I had a struggling district with struggling wards. We ended up doing
miracles for the Lord there in that district.
I remember that I learned
the importance of working with members in Totolac (Tlaxcala). Wow, we did some
great stuff there Elder Nuncio, Elder Lopez, and I with the members. We
ended up having success for the members. They are great there.
Now as an AP
I have learned a lot of everything. Having to run a Mission of over 100 Missionaries is not an easy task and I have so much respect for the President. He is a great man and has taught me a lot, especially about the
future after the Mission and how to apply everything I have learned
here, there in the real world.
I have learned a lot in the Mission and I know that
it will help me throughout my life, but I believe that the most valuable
thing that I have learned here, that I will always treasure is
understanding how and why to apply the Atonement in my life. I really
understand that it is more than just repenting everyday. I have learned
that it is essential for us to experiment it everyday. I have learned
that to be able to experiment it each day we must be obedient. It's
impossible to understand the Atonement or even experiment it if we are
not obedient. Most people think that you must be a sinner and sin to
understand it, but I believe that you must be obedient to understand it
because the obedient repent....sinners might not. I have learned that
the Atonement has a divine power that can set us apart from reaching our
potential....yet it allows us to go beyond that if it is required, and
more times than not, God needs us to go past our potential so that we may
help Him establish His Kingdom and we do it through the atonement.
I have learned that really we must understand the
importance of the Atonement because it is the center of all we do. We
could study the Book of Mormon and find that a lot of scriptures that
maybe we don't see very well talk about the Atonement. The Bible actually
only refers to the word Atonement one time were as the Book of Mormon refers to it 39
times. Besides the fact that it mentions the word more in the Book of
Mormon, helps us understand at a broader view what the Atonement is
through personal experiences of the Nephite and Lamanite people.
I know that the Atonement is important. I know that
it is essential for us to apply it to our lives each day. We must
experiment at some point in our lives a little what He experienced. I
testify as His representative that Christ lives! He loves us. He wants
us to be like him and through His Atonement we can do it.
With Love,
Elder Brady Lester

Mexico Week 89: Conferences, Learning and Spiritual Feeding
Hey Family,
Well again I don't have much time to sit
down and write a legit letter. I have been in and out of the offices all
day everyday. Last night we didn't get home until 11:00pm. We are
working hard getting ready for the changes that we have on Tuesday. We
have sent two more Elders home too so it's been very crazy here. We have
been working hard and we feel like we are behind but I believe that we
are more ready for these changes than the last time. We have a lot of new
things going down. We are splitting a Zone into two Zones. Now every Stake in the Mission will have their own Zone and Zone Leaders which
makes things a lot easier. We have been working hard to think about how
to do the changes for the next change because my generation is going
home a week early. Things just have been really crazy.
Last week though we really had a great week. A lot of Conferences but a lot of Learning and Spiritual feeding. My topics went
great. In the Leadership Training meeting I talked about judging
righteously in our callings and correcting disobedience. It went very
well. I share the example of Lehi in 1 Nephi 8:37-38 and how we need to
judge righteously like Lehi did to his sons. I shared another example in
D&C 101:2-5 as well. In the regular Zone Conference I talked about the
Atonement and Gossip. It went very well and I have learned a lot about
the Atonement while studying my topic. It has been great. I have really
looked into the Scriptures and notice that the Atonement is on every
page of the BoM. One example would be 1 Nephi 3:31 when Nephi and Sam are beaten
by his brothers and then the angel comes. It's very interesting to see how
it is talking about the Atonement.
The Conferences have been great and we have been able
to teach the Elders a lot of things. We really hit the importance of
being Obedient and Repenting because we need to get onto other things in
the Mission and not always talk about the Obedience issue that we have.
The President has said that if we are not willing to live in a Mission
of Obedience, we can go home.
Well we have started to talk about other
things. On Friday we had our ZL conference and we talked about a lot of
things. We talked about Numbers of Excellence that my companion and I
have been wanting to have. They are great numbers and really high norms
for us. It really is going to change the Mission. Yesterday we saw how
excited the Mission is as we went to a couple Zone Training meetings.
The new culture is being placed and everyone is excited!
Well I don't have much time. Hope everyone is doing just great! Love you all and hope that you all have a great week!

Mexico Week 88: Crazy busy week!
Hey!
Well I have no time to write but I feel bad
because I have not been able to. Just want to write a quick message
saying that everything is going great here. We are making some big leaps
in the work here in Puebla! I hope that it continues that way. I know
it will. President Christensen is a great President and what I love
about him is that he teaches us how important the Mission is for our
future and what we have to learn in the Mission in order to have a
successful future. He is an inspired man and I know that he was called
of God.
Want you all to know that I love ya all and that I
miss you :) We have had a busy week this week with Zone Conferences and Zone Leader Council and now it will be General Conference. It's been
crazy and it's just going to get more crazy!! Have a great week!

Mexico Week 84: New Area, New Assignment, New Life
Hey
Everybody!!
Well
this week has been a very interesting week. I am writing you all today because
tomorrow we will not have time to even wash our clothes hahaha. As most of you
know I am the new AP which is an Honor. I still don't know what are
all my duties and stuff like that but I will be learning. I am actually in
Puebla right now and am in the offices with the assistants and my
companion. We are receiving some training from them and we are working on the
transfers for the Mission. It’s a lot of work and we are trying to get a lot
done. In the afternoon we will be going with President Christensen to our old
area to have a training meeting with the Stake Presidency, Bishops, Ward
Mission Leaders, and Missionaries. It’s going to be interesting going to all of
these types of meetings with the President and his wife. When we get back we
are going to have to go "Elder hunting" because there is an Elder who
is doing some bad stuff with girls....I am so not ready for that hahahaha.
Tomorrow
we will be receiving the new Missionaries who come from Mexico in the morning
and I am going to be able to see President Reeves which will be weird hahaha.
We have training meetings all day tomorrow with them. Tomorrow night we will be
going to the airport to pick up the Americans that are coming and we will have
to drop them off at the Mission home. On Tuesday we will be in training
meetings with them all day as well, and then in the afternoon we will have the
transfer meeting hahaha.
Things
are beginning to look interesting and it’s going to be a different experience
being an AP. Hahaha, only three missionaries here have ever had all the Mission assignments - Elder
Gonzalez, Elder Bencomo, and me. I refer to Junior comp, Senior comp, Trainer,
District Leader, Zone Leader, AP, and Branch President hahaha...and those two
other Elders are legends so I have big shoes to fill hahahaha. The good thing
about being an AP is I will get to know all the Missionaries and the whole Mission,
travel a lot, learn a lot more from the President, and get my packages on time
if anybody sends me some. hahaha! :)
As
of this week in our area...well there was not a lot to do. I had to go to the
hospital for my knee but it’s getting better and now I can start working and stop
resting my knee. The good thing is that I won’t have to have surgery or
anything, but I am taking some medicine which is helping out. I will have to
take it light on the soccer and basketball :(
Last
night we had a huge ward activity and a ton of people came. It was a BBQ that
we planned, my comp and I with the Ward Mission Leader, Luis Medel, and the Ward
Missionaries. We planned to have a BBQ and an open house. We planned on having
about 100 with 20 invites but it was a bigger success. We had almost 200 people
and 80 invites and we had a great time. The food ran out so fast but everybody
was asking me recipes for the shredded beef and BBQ sauce that I made
:) It was delicious. We put in some spice into the sauce because it’s Mexico.
We had mashed potatoes and corn on the cob with baked bread and butter. We did
it just like in the USA. A lot of the invites wanted to listen to the
Missionaries, so the new Missionaries who are going to be in Totolac Ward –
Tlaxcala, are going to have a lot of work. I am going to miss that ward. It was
my favorite area for sure in the Mission and I really hope to go back and
visit. Hahaha, I hope to start my English school with Luis Medel
actually...maybe it will work out.
Well
I don't have much more time to write...and I am sure my letters will
be shorter some weeks than others because my P-days are going to be
much different. If you can try to write me early Sunday or in the afternoon
because I might have to write on some Sundays like today. I love you all and
hope that you all have a great week! I want to wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to
Brinkley! Love ya tons Sis!
Con Amor,
Elder Lester

Letter from President & Sister Christensen
Dear Parents of Elder Lester,
As you know, your son was called to
serve in the Mexico Puebla Mission and during the time that he has been here,
the Mission was divided. This may have raised some anxiety at the onset of this
news for those Missionaries who had to leave President Reeves and all of the Missionaries they had grown to love in the South Mission. Your son was one of
those, of course, who is now serving in the Puebla North Mission. My husband,
Ralph Christensen, is the new Mission President.
Seven of our nine children have served Missions, so we know something of a parent’s desire to know about the Mission President and wife who will be caring for your son. My apologies for being so slow to introduce ourselves to you. It has been a very busy month since our arrival. However, I would like to now take a minute to introduce ourselves to you.
President Christensen has most recently worked at the Church at President Hinckley’s invitation as Managing Director of Human Resources. Prior to that he worked as Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Hallmark Cards. All of our nine children are now married and we have been blessed to have 30 (soon to be 32) grandchildren. I loved and feel grateful to have had the blessing of being home to raise our family. I know the busyness of a house full of children involved in sports, music, and other extracurricular activities. We have both enjoyed service in the church and loved the influence of the gospel in our home. Prior to going to Salt Lake City, we had no family roots in Utah. We raised our family in Maine, Washington, D.C., Colorado, Boston, and Kansas City. We loved the opportunities and experiences of living in those areas.
My husband served his Mission many years ago in the California Sacramento Mission, Spanish speaking. He enjoyed working with many Mexican people during those two years and considers it a privilege to now be able to come to their homeland to serve. I never served a Mission and I do not speak the Spanish language, but I am determined to learn. We are anxiously engaged in this great work and look forward to working with your son as we press forward together. right along the side of your son. What a joy it has been, so far, to spend time with the Missionaries. They are outstanding young men and women. Thank you for doing your part to raise such a fine son.

Mexico Week 82: Rain and more Rain
Hey
Everyone!
Thanks
for writing me! Everything has been
going great. We have three Baptisms this
week on Saturday so I hope everything will go good and things will continue to
work out. We have been struggling
finding new investigators. We need to work a little harder to find. It’s been hard to get people to listen to us. Right now we are planning on doing a ward
activity and we have the goal to have 50 references from the members. I hope that we can get a good number of people
so that we can teach more. Everyone is
getting Baptized, hahaha. In the activity
we are planning on having an open house and a BBQ dinner :) It’s going to be
awesome!
It’s
been raining alot and raining even more. It’s hurricane season so it’s normal
but I need to enjoy it because at home it doesn’t rain as much. I am getting
nervous now that the time is winding down. There is so much I want to be able
to do before I get home but it seems like it’s almost impossible. I hope to be
able to accomplish my goals.
This
week we will have interviews with President Christensen. I hope that they go
well. I really love the President. He is a great leader and has taught me alot.
We will have changes in 2 weeks. Who knows if I will go, but wherever I end up I
will finish there I believe. It’s crazy how fast the time flies by. I don’t
know if I have done enough but I hope to continue with the work after the Mission
working hard in my calling and with my future family.
Things
have been going good. I hope everything keeps going well at home. I love you
all. I uploaded pics last week but the internet is slow so I still have another
260 pics to upload. I don’t know if you guys checked them out. Well I gotta go.
Love ya all. Thanks for your love and prayers.
Love,
Elder

Mexico Week 76: Zone Leader Conference & More Rain
Hey
Family!!
Thank
you all for writing. I love your letters. Really Kasey...you broke my heart with that
Steve Nash news but I am happy that he is going to be going to a team where he
can win a championship. It will be fun to watch him play in LA. Sounds like you boys are having a great time
up in Utah camping and stuff. Sounds like a plan maggie...I will have to try
those enchiladas and your pozole dad ;) Hahaha. Thank you Mom and Grandma for the money.
Tomorrow I will be buying my leather scripture cases. Tomorrow we have a leadership training meeting
in Puebla. Hahaha, we are traveling alot. I am not a fan of the Zone Leader thing...I
miss being a Branch President, hahahaha.
Well
the work has been good here. We got to go to the new mission home on Friday for
the Zone Leader conference. It’s really
nice. The new president lives in the
nicest neighborhood in Puebla. It looks like an American neighborhood but more
modern. There is a golf course and everything there. We got to eat breakfast. Sister Christensen made us eggs, juice, and
pancakes with whip cream!! I have not had whip cream for 20 months hahahaha. We
had a great conference. I learned ALOT
about A LOT, hahahahaha. Everything I learned really I can see how to apply it
in my life after the mission and that is what President Christensen said that
he wants. Just so that you know the
president a little more:
He
served a mission in California Spanish speaking.
He
was the Vice President of Hallmark Cards (he is rich).
He
quit his job because the First Presidency asked him to work as the Head
Director of Finances of the Church (he is even more rich).
He
had monthly meetings with the Twelve and the First Presidency.
That
is just a little background info about my new Mission President. I guess that I
will have to have alot of money to be a Mission President someday, hahahaha. In the conference he told us that Elder
Bednar´s favorite scripture is 2 Nephi 2:14. Hahahahaha, all of us Zone Leaders just looked
at each other like...wow...he knows the favorite scripture of an Apostle,
hahahaha. He is very spiritual but he says things how they really are. On
Friday we did something that I never thought that we would do. We started
making the "culture" of this new Mission. We started talking about
the Purpose, Processes, and Actions. We talked about how we could make sure
that our Actions or Practices in the Mission are aligned with the Processes and
the Purpose and throw out the bad Actions and Practices that have nothing to do
with our Purpose. It was very cool. Hahaha,
then I think that I received revelation for my personal life in that moment.
That formula is a great one to be able to start and better businesses (just a
comment since you all know that I like business). Hahaha it was a great
conference. I really felt the spirit and learned alot.
Here
in our area we have been working our tails off. It has been raining like crazy and literally
the rain has been up to our shins. We keep working hahaha. The other day we
were working in the rain and it was just coming down and some members saw us
and asked why we weren’t home since it was raining so hard. My comp just
laughed and said...the work goes on. It’s true what he said. The work goes on.
God keeps working and doesn’t rest if it’s raining.
Today
we played like 2-3 hours of basketball at the church with a team of a brother
in our ward. They are real good. I had a great time but I have just lost all of
my condition hahaha. I would just run up and down the court dying. It was
really the best basketball that I have played in the Mission.
Well
I gotta go! I love you all and hope that you have a great week! Kasey I hope
that you enjoy EFY! Miss you all tons!! OH!! Hahaha before I go I have some
good news for you all. My date changed for going home. I was supposed to go
home the 28th of November but President Christensen wants me to be home for
Thanksgiving, so I will be going home the 20th of November, so you will all
have me home a week early hahahaha. Love ya!!
